Old Mathews and Gloucester, Virginia, as they are affectionately termed by those who knew them in the old times, were filled with colonial families and were the home of a peculiarly refined and aristocratic society. Mary Anna Morrison Jackson

Mary Anna Morrison was born in the year 1831 in the town of Charlotte, North Caroline. She grew up always knowing of the love of the Savior. Her father was the minister of the local Presbyterian church. Her education was taken at Salem Academy from 1847 to 1849.

Anna met her future husband (Thomas Johnathan Jackson) while visiting  her sister, Mrs. Dana Harvey Hill. At this time Thomas was teaching in Lexington,Virginia, at the Military Institute. He was also engaged to Elinor Junkin. (more…)

Martha Finley

Known for her classic books The Elsie Dinsmore Series, few people know anything about the author. Martha Finley was born on the 26th of April, 1828, in Chillicothe, Ohio.  Her parents had a good supply of funds and educated her at home by private tutors. Later in life she went to a few private schools. Miss Finley lived with her parents until they died in 1853. The particular locations of the various places she lived over many years is some what uncertain. She taught for a number of years and had her first publications made in a Presbyterian publication. She eventually became ill and had to move to Maryland. (more…)
